Dubai to Hatta Road Trip: Route, Stops & Driving Tips

Mountain road through Hajar Mountains near Hatta

Why Hatta Is the Best Day Trip from Dubai

Hatta is a mountain exclave of Dubai sitting in the Hajar Mountains, about 130 kilometres east of the city. It is the complete opposite of everything Dubai is known for. Instead of skyscrapers and malls, you get wadis, mountain trails, turquoise dam water, and villages that look nothing like the rest of the emirate.

The drive itself is half the point. You go from flat desert to rugged mountain scenery within an hour and a half. It is one of the few day trips from Dubai that genuinely feels like you have left the country.

The Route — E44 Dubai-Hatta Road

The most direct route is the E44 highway, also called the Dubai-Hatta Road. Pick it up from the intersection with the E311 (Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road) and follow it east.

Total distance is approximately 100-130 kilometres depending on where in Dubai you start. From Downtown Dubai, expect around 90 minutes in normal traffic. From Dubai Marina, add another 15-20 minutes.

The road is a well-maintained dual carriageway the entire way. Speed limit is 120 km/h on the highway sections, dropping as you enter Hatta town. There are petrol stations along the route but they thin out after you pass the main highway stretch, so fill up before you hit the mountain section.

Alternative Route via Sharjah-Kalba Road (E102)

If you want a less busy drive, take the E102 through Sharjah towards Kalba and then cut across to Hatta. This route is slightly longer but the road is quieter and the scenery through the Sharjah desert is worth seeing.

This route also works well if you want to combine Hatta with a trip to the east coast. You could drive to Hatta via the E44, spend the day, and return via the E102 through Fujairah and Kalba for a different view on the way back.

What to See and Do in Hatta

Hatta Dam. The main attraction. Bright turquoise water sitting between mountain walls. You can kayak, pedal boat, or just sit and look at it. Arrive early because it gets busy, especially on weekends.

Hatta Wadi Hub. An adventure park near the dam with mountain biking, axe throwing, archery, and zorbing. Good for a few hours. You can rent mountain bikes here and ride the trails that wind through the mountains.

Hatta Heritage Village. A restored mountain village showing what life looked like here before Dubai became what it is. Small but worth 30 minutes.

Hatta Hill Park. A viewpoint above the town with panoramic views of the mountains and the dam. Drive or hike up.

Mountain bike trails. Hatta has some of the best mountain biking trails in the UAE, ranging from beginner-friendly paths to technical single track. Bikes can be rented at Wadi Hub.

Do You Need a 4x4?

No. The main route to Hatta and all the key attractions are accessible by any normal car. The E44 is a standard highway and the roads within Hatta are paved.

A 4x4 or SUV is only needed if you plan to go off the main roads into the wadis or take the unpaved tracks into the mountains. If you stick to the dam, the heritage village, and Wadi Hub, any car will do.

That said, the roads do have some elevation changes and tight bends in the mountain section. A car with reasonable ground clearance handles the speed bumps and occasional rough patches more comfortably than a low sports car.

Best Time to Go

October to April is the ideal window. The mountain air is cooler than Dubai but summer temperatures in Hatta still hit 40°C and above, which makes outdoor activities unpleasant.

Weekdays are significantly quieter than weekends. Friday and Saturday see heavy traffic on the E44, especially in the cooler months. If you can go on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you will have the dam and trails largely to yourself.

Leave Dubai by 7-8 AM to arrive before the crowds. Late afternoon light in the mountains is excellent for photos on the drive back.

Driving Tips for the Hatta Road

Speed cameras are present on the E44, particularly in the first half of the route. Use Waze for live alerts.

The mountain section has some sharp bends with limited visibility. Do not overtake on blind corners. The road narrows in places and there is occasional oncoming traffic.

Fill up your fuel tank before leaving Dubai or at the stations along the highway. There is a petrol station in Hatta town but the options are limited.

Watch for speed bumps as you enter Hatta and the smaller roads around the dam area. Some of them are steep enough to scrape a low car.

If you are renting a car for this trip, an SUV or a comfortable GT car is the best choice. Something like a Range Rover or a Porsche Cayenne handles the highway comfortably and deals with the mountain roads without any issues. Check our fleet at LuxeClub if you want something that suits the drive.
